# Enrich inbound signups

> Match signup emails to business profiles with Waterfall, then use role and company data in lead qualification and routing.

Start with a signup email and use Waterfall Contact Enrichment to find an available business profile. Results can include the person's role, company, location, and contact details.

This is useful when you want a shorter signup form or need more context before sending a lead to sales. Your application can use the returned fields in its own qualification and routing rules.

## Start with the signup email

[Contact Enrichment](https://docs.waterfall.io/v1/contact-enrichment-launcher.md) accepts business and personal email addresses. When you have a professional email, use it: professional emails generally provide better enrichment quality.

The following request uses an illustrative signup address and an internal ID:

```bash theme={null}
curl --request POST 'https://api.waterfall.io/v1/enrichment/contact' \
  --header "x-api-key: $WATERFALL_API_KEY" \
  --header 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  --data '{
    "email": "jordan.lee@example.com",
    "include_phones": false,
    "custom_fields": {
      "signup_id": "signup_1042"
    }
  }'
```

The response returns a `job_id`. Save it with the signup ID and retrieve the result through [Contact Enrichment Finder](https://docs.waterfall.io/v1/contact-enrichment-finder.md), or provide a `webhook_url` in the request to receive the result when it is ready.

## Turn the result into useful context

On a successful job, inspect `output.person`. Available fields include `title`, `company_name`, `company_domain`, `location`, `linkedin_url`, and `experiences`.

This illustrative partial Finder response shows how the email in the request can resolve to role and company information. The person and company are fictional. Job metadata and usage are omitted.

```json theme={null}
{
  "output": {
    "person": {
      "first_name": "Jordan",
      "last_name": "Lee",
      "title": "Head of Sales",
      "company_name": "Example Company",
      "company_domain": "example.com"
    }
  }
}
```

1. Check that the returned profile fits the signup information you already have.
2. Use the person's role and company in your qualification rules.
3. If you need company size or industry, pass the returned domain to [Company Enrichment](https://docs.waterfall.io/v1/company-enrichment-launcher.md).
4. Route the signup or update its record in your application.

Allow for missing fields and unresolved matches. A completed job does not mean every field is available, and an unmatched signup can still be a valuable lead.

## Can I identify the employer behind a personal email?

You can submit a personal email for matching to a business profile. The email domain itself does not identify the person's employer. Use the company information from a matched profile, and keep the signup unresolved when the evidence is insufficient.

## What if I also have a LinkedIn profile?

Contact Enrichment supports a LinkedIn profile or name plus company domain as alternative input strategies. If you provide an email, the email path takes priority; adding LinkedIn does not ask the API to cross-check both. See [input strategies](https://docs.waterfall.io/v1/contact-enrichment-launcher.md) before building a fallback flow.

## Plan for enrichment after signup

Contact Enrichment runs asynchronously. Keep the form submission independent of the enrichment job, then update the lead when a result arrives. Review [usage costs](https://docs.waterfall.io/v1/inline-usage.md) and [evaluate matches on your signup data](https://docs.waterfall.io/v1/evaluate-waterfall.md) before using the result for automatic routing.
