# Enrich contact and company records

> Fill gaps in CRM records with Waterfall contact and company enrichment, using email, LinkedIn, or company identifiers.

Add the business context your CRM is missing. Start with a contact's email or LinkedIn profile, or a company's domain, to retrieve available profile and contact data with Waterfall. Use the result to fill gaps in job titles, company details, and contact channels.

Use your CRM record ID to connect each request to the right record. Your integration controls which fields to update, when to refresh them, and how to handle conflicts with data already in the CRM.

## Choose the record you want to enrich

| Record | What you have | API |
| - | - | - |
| Contact | Email, LinkedIn, or name plus company domain | [Contact Enrichment](https://docs.waterfall.io/v1/contact-enrichment-launcher.md) |
| Company | Domain, company LinkedIn, or company name | [Company Enrichment](https://docs.waterfall.io/v1/company-enrichment-launcher.md) |
| Contact needing a phone number | A supported contact identifier | [Phone Enrichment](https://docs.waterfall.io/v1/phone-enrichment-launcher.md) |
| Contact whose employer may have changed | Previous company plus contact identifier, or a professional email | [Job Change](https://docs.waterfall.io/v1/use-cases/job-changes.md) |

For a company record, a domain or LinkedIn identifier gives you a clearer target than a name shared by several businesses.

## Enrich a contact

This illustrative request uses a LinkedIn profile and carries your CRM ID through the job:

```bash theme={null}
curl --request POST 'https://api.waterfall.io/v1/enrichment/contact' \
  --header "x-api-key: $WATERFALL_API_KEY" \
  --header 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  --data '{
    "linkedin": "https://www.linkedin.com/in/example-contact/",
    "include_phones": false,
    "custom_fields": {
      "crm_contact_id": "contact_582"
    }
  }'
```

Replace the example profile with your contact's LinkedIn URL. Save the returned `job_id`, then retrieve the result through [Contact Enrichment Finder](https://docs.waterfall.io/v1/contact-enrichment-finder.md) or a webhook. The result includes your metadata in `input.task.custom_fields` and the available profile in `output.person`.

To enrich the company too, use its domain with `POST /v1/enrichment/company`:

```json theme={null}
{
  "domain": "example.com",
  "custom_fields": {
    "crm_account_id": "account_204"
  }
}
```

This returns a separate `job_id`. [Company Enrichment Finder](https://docs.waterfall.io/v1/company-enrichment-finder.md) returns available company fields under `output.company`, including size, industry, location, and description.

## Decide what to write back

Keep the update policy simple: fill empty fields, review material differences, and preserve existing values when the enrichment result has no usable replacement. Check the matched person or company before writing data to the CRM.

For a list of records, your integration submits individual enrichment requests and handles their results within the [rate limits](https://docs.waterfall.io/v1/rate-limit.md). Save each job ID so you can retrieve the existing job instead of launching another just to check its result.

## Does enrichment keep my CRM up to date automatically?

Each request enriches the record you submit. Your workflow schedules later checks and writes the results to your CRM. Use [Job Change](https://docs.waterfall.io/v1/use-cases/job-changes.md) when the question is specifically whether a person has left or moved from their previous employer.

## How fresh are the returned fields?

Every email Waterfall finds is verified in real time before delivery. Profiles are typically refreshed in under 14 days, with real-time updates when needed.

Job timestamps describe request processing, not when each profile field was last verified.
